Summary: There's so much past inside our present. Vincent, Cloud, and Tifa; a story about certain banalities attached to getting older.

Notes: I wrote this a while ago. It was right around the time that I started to be unable to write anything at all. I keep on hunting to find something to say and find nothing at all. This might not be the best story in the world but I like the fact that it exists.

It's oddly personal, in a strange way. My grandfather was quite unwell by the time he died and he hardly recognized any of us. It's strange though, because people do get flashes where they'll say something very much like how they used to be. This story is a tiny bit delicate to me for that reason and so I'm not sure if I'm pleased with it or not. I'm not always happy when I recognize bits of my own life that crop in whatever I'm writing. I suppose it is a bit of the nature of the business, though.

I wrote this because I've been wanting to write a story about Tifa ageing for a while. I have sympathy for her. My joints are already vaguely messed up from martial arts and I'm only 23! I shudder to think about what I'd look like under a full-body x-ray!

Summary: You never know the kind of people you're likely to meet in the back alleys of Sector Two. Reno and the story of a girl passing through.

Notes: This is a very belated request from [info]drakonlily that I write a Reno.Rinoa story. It's been living in the back of my head for a long while but I finally wrote it down last night. It was my first time tackling Rinoa. I actually heartily disliked her in FFVIII but, somehow, I find her a much more enjoyable character if you place her in context after the game.

And, I did actually think a little bit about the Squall question when writing this! In my head, if Rinoa were to go about travelling like this, I rather think that it would be because she and Squall are Done. Since I'm me and a tiny bit fatalistic (and mildly in love with the kind of connection I imagine a Sorceress and her Knight would have), I rather imagine that they've either been permanently seperated or that Squall died a long while back. Personally, I rather like the idea of Rinoa travelling 'just because'.

This one's for Drakon. Everyone else, enjoy.

It's December and that can only mean one thing: It's ficmas time!

Now I've been debating what I wanted to do for ficmas this year. Normally I offer to write people a story of their choice but the honest truth is that I'm too busy to randomly take on ten new story requests the way I've done previously. I'd considered throwing out ficmas all together but, to me, a Christmas without ficmas is like a New Years without fireworks. That'd just be sad.

So I have a solution!

Ficmas 2008

If you want to play along, please submit one story element to me. I'll be writing one big holiday story for everyone this year. A story element can be anything that you want me to touch on. It can be a setting, a colour, a line, a theme, a character, or a series of events. Anything and everything goes! Ex:

+ the line: she stands with a well-intentioned man
+ Vincent, Veld; and why Vincent doesn't have a license
+ Cosmo Canyon at midnight
+ Sashimi

Judging from my F-list, it'll likely end up as a FF7 story but if you randomly want to throw in a reference to another fandom, I'll take that too! Whatever you give me, I'll make it work. Call it an exercise in creating order out of chaos.

Summary: At the very least, political machinations within Shinra were always entertaining. Veld.Scarlet.

Notes: I have no excuses. For whatever reason, I wanted to write something about a woman reclining on a divan. This is what happened. It's set somewhere before OGC when Scarlet had just taken up her position as head of Weapon's and Manufacturing.

The latin line in this is 'To the victor goes the spoils' and the French one is 'Well then, it's war'. The French line might sound less exciting but Scarlet is quoting Les liaisons dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons), a very famous 18th century libertine novel by Laclos. It's what the Marquise de Merteuil tells the Vicomte de Valmont when they start their machinations to destroy each other. Oh, libertines.

(Yes, I may or may not have just finished Les liaisons dangereuses. It's fabulous.)

Summary: People are complicated creatures. Vincent and Tifa, from OGC to FF:DOC. There's always another story.

Notes: OMG I ACTUALLY FINISHED IT. [info]is_bel requested a Vin.Tifa fic from me last Christmas based on the main theme song of Princess Mononoke. So, this is what I came up with.

I started writing this fic almost a year ago, sitting in a coffee shop on my university campus. The fine arts students display their work there sometimes and there was one painting that was litterally three trees on a pointed hill, with one burning. Hence this the start of this story.

I have a weird obsession with POV, mostly because I'm convinced that it's pretty much impossible to get the whole story of something. I just hope that this came out readable. I was trying to cover all the ways that you can talk about Vincent and Tifa in one story - or at least the different ways that I can talk about them. I know that all writers are essentially saying the same things over and over again but I feel like I've finally exorcized what I wanted to say about these two... which is a pretty wonderful thing, really.

But, then again, maybe I should just be hoping that the bloody thing is readable. XD

[info]is_bel, I really hope that you enjoy this. Sorry it took me so long.

Summary: Tseng backstory (FFVII: BC-OGC). Life in Midgar and incest in the ranks; a fic about growing up more than anything else. Everybody's gotta learn sometime. For [info]venefica_aura

Notes: This is a gift for [info]venefica_aura. Around Christmas she prompted me for a story with Reno and Tseng talking about incest in the ranks. I laughed and said that that would make Tseng a bit of a hypocrite. Her response was essentially: the more the merrier.

It turned into a long story that was essentially about how Tseng got from point A to B, from Before Crisis to OGC. That transition does demand an explanation. I’ve seen it done a few ways and I think that this works as well as any of them.

It’s mostly a story about growing up. Everybody’s gotta learn sometime.

Notes: Look what I found! In traditional TP style, I wrote this chapter, thought that it didn't fit at all, forgot about it, and then discovered it over a month later only to realize why this chapter had to play out exactly this way. Essentially, it forced me to say good-bye to my original plan for this story but it should still be finished up in about four chapters or so.

The first line of this pleases me. The chapter couldn't exist without it. Oh, Vincent.

Next chapter: Veld makes a mistake and Cloud and Tifa have a conversation about ghosts.

Summary: "His left hand wipes the side of his mouth and there’s a smear of blood just above his thumb. When he looks up again there is something dark and violent looking back out at me. I smile." Darkfic, Vin pov.

Notes: The first time I wrote this chapter I really didn't like it. I left it alone and vaguely considered scrapping Sans entirely. I sometimes think that the more concrete things that I write now (Restitution, for example) might somehow be 'better' than this type of voice.

But there's something really amazing about writing Vincent like this. I can't do it all the time. I normally can't sit down and just write out a chapter of Sans but when I get it right I'm normally happy with what I accomplish.

I think that my favourite part about this chapter is that if you squint you can see OGC Vincent in it pretty clearly. My main goal in Sans was to write a Vin backstory that would account for all his character aspects, to the best of my ability. I'm a little bit worried about continuing to post this on ff.net (not that my readership is huge anyways). I suppose that this story means more to me than it would mean to the vast majority of people out there. Still, what's a pirate to do? We can't exactly pick and choose our muses.

The title took me forever to name but, if you squint, I think it's pretty obvious what I'm trying to say.

Enough chatting. Enjoy the chapter. Things will get more normal for Vin after this - for a little while at least.

Summary: It's about time that the understanding set in. Sometimes people are the way they apologize.

Notes: Aha, now my sappy nature becomes apparent. I really hope that this chapter doesn't make either of them seem out of character. It really wasn't what I was expecting but somehow it all managed to fit. I think that my favourite part is probably the ending because I didn't know that Veld really cared until that exact point.

This story should wrap up in about five chapters. I actually have a plan now, which is something that is a little bit unusual for me. It's probably because I'm enjoying writing this so much - I'm a more tempted to put some legitimate effort behind it.

Next chapter: Tifa snoops and they talk about things by not talking about them.

Capellarossi is the last name that [info]drakonlily gives him. Whenever I write punk!Reno, I feel the need to give him that name.

Next chapter brings fisticuffs (of a sort) and a new resolution.

Summary: The snow doesn't always fall sweetly for shinigami. Rangiku and the laws of Soul Society.

Notes: This one is a (highly belated) Christmas fic for [info]misfire_. It was fairly difficult for me to write simply because I don't write Bleach fanfiction. I've never been able to wrap my head around any fandom besides FF7. It was fun, in a way, to see if I could talk to somebody different for once.

I'm don't know if this would fit the bill for what most people would consider 'Rangiku.Gin'. I did the best I could. Rangiku's alwasys struck me as a very strong woman - somewhat similar to Tifa in a few ways. The idea of her pinning didn't really sit with me so this is what I came up with.

Also, I confess that I accidentally borrowed a line in this. I didn't know that I was doing it at the time. [info]silentsoul wrote a Vin.Tifa called Snow Falls Sweet. That's where I'm getting the line from. It just goes to show that very good lines can stick with you even years after the fact.

One day, I'd like to one day write a series of snippets about every line that Veld remembers in this story. Honestly, the kid is just full of half-hidden scenes. It would be entertaining at the very least.
